.PDF files should automatically default to open with the application 'Preview'. Personally I highly recommend it over using the Adobe Reader product. If you have an OEM iMac, this program should install with your 'Installation DVD'.
How to edit a PDF using Preview. If you haven't updated to Mojave or Catalina, you can still edit PDFs on your Mac for free using the Preview app that comes bundled with the Mac operating system. Open the PDF on Preview. Copy the text from the document. Paste the copy on Microsoft Word. Make changes to the copy; Go to File Save As and select PDF from the drop-down menu. Convert using Google Docs. Log into your Google Drive account. Upload the PDF file by dragging the document to the dashboard or by going to New File Upload. In OS X, Apple’s Preview. Is the default application for opening a number of file types, including PDF’s. While versatile, Preview will NOT allow you to make changes to PDF’s with editable content. Follow these instructions to set Adobe Acrobat Reader as the default application for opening PDF files.
Solution: Use the AutoCAD web app to view or edit DWG drawing files online, or the web-based Autodesk Viewer to view DWG drawing files and other file types. Note: The editing capabilities of the AutoCAD web app are only available to customers who are subscribed to a desktop version of AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT.
As my iMac is at the Apple Store (thank you Apple Care, you have paid for yourself!) getting the display replaced, here is what I recall from memory (assuming you have Preview installed, but not set as your default program to view .pdf files): Good external hard drive for macbook pro.
Hold down the <Control> button and click (or right click if you have this enabled) over the .pdf document you wish to open.
Their should be an option that allows you to 'Open with' (something like that) or choose the default application (should be pretty intuitive..)
Open the .pdf document with your program of choice (in my case Preview).
One of the cool things about Preview, is if you have a single-sided document scanner (flatbed or with an automatic document feeder (ADF)), it is very simple to combine them into one document without having to purchase other .pdf applications.
